Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has claimed right-handed pitcher Casey Lawrence off waivers from Toronto. To make room on the Major League 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Evan Scribner has been transferred to 60-day disabled list.
 
Lawrence, 29, has been optioned and will report to AAA Tacoma. He was designated for assignment on May 8 after posting a 0-3 record with an 8.78 ERA (13 ER, 13.1 IP) in four games, two starts, with the Jays. He made his MLB debut April 8 in relief at Tampa Bay and took the loss (1 ER, 0.2 IP). In three starts with AAA Buffalo this season prior to being recalled he was 1-0 with an 0.90 ERA (1 ER, 10.0 IP) with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts.
 
In parts of eight minor league seasons in the Blue Jays system he was 64-60 with a 3.80 ERA in 172 games, 161 starts, with 7 complete games, 1 shutout and 1 save. He was originally signed by Toronto as an amateur free agent June 15, 2010 after attending Albright College in Reading, PA.
 
Scribner, 31, was placed on the 10-day disabled list with flexor bundle strain in his right elbow on April 29 (retro to April 26).
 
Prior to being injured, he was 0-2 with an 11.05 ERA (9 ER, 7.1 IP) with 6 strikeouts in 8 relief appearances with Seattle this season. Last season, he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 14.0 IP) with 15 strikeouts in 12 relief appearances with Seattle after returning from the disabled list. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 (retro to March 25) with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle and made eight rehab appearances before being activated.
 
In parts of seven Major League seasons, he is 5-4 with a 4.15 ERA (78 ER, 169.0 IP) with 155 strikeouts in 145 relief appearances with San Diego (2011), Oakland (2012-15) and Seattle (2016-2017). He was acquired by Seattle from Oakland in exchange for Trey Cochran-Gill (rhp) on Dec. 8, 2015. He was selected by Arizona in the 28th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Central Connecticut State University.
