O'Neill heads 8 Mariners on AFL roster

Club's No. 2 prospect joins Jackson (No. 3) and Gohara (No. 5) among participants

ARLINGTON -- Tyler O'Neill, a 21-year-old outfielder who was named the Southern League's Most Valuable Player on Wednesday for Double-A Jackson, was among eight Mariners prospects selected to compete in the Arizona Fall League this offseason.
Other Mariners chosen for the Peoria Javelinas squad were pitchers , Luiz Gohara, Emilio Pagan and Dylan Unsworth, catcher Tyler Marlette, infielder Drew Jackson and outfielder .
Altavilla and Heredia are currently with the Mariners' Major League club as Altavilla was recently promoted to the bullpen and Heredia has appeared in 21 games, batting .204 with one home run in 49 at-bats and playing a solid left field.

O'Neill is the team's No. 2-ranked prospect by MLBPipeline.com. He's hit .296 with 24 home runs and a franchise-record 100 RBIs in 125 games this season. Jackson is the team's No. 3 prospect, Gohara is No. 5 and Altavilla is at No. 22.

Pagan is currently playing for Triple-A Tacoma. O'Neill, Unsworth and Marlette are at Jackson. Drew Jackson is playing shortstop for High-A Bakersfield, while Gohara is at Class A Clinton.
The six-team league, which is run by Major League Baseball, opens on Oct. 11, and games are played Monday-Saturday through mid-November.
