MINNEAPOLIS -- Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma is ready to return to game action, as he recovers from inflammation in his right shoulder. The right-hander is scheduled to make his first rehab start with Class A Advanced Modesto on Wednesday.
Iwakuma, who is 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA in six starts this season, has been out since May 7.
"We're hoping for three innings, 45 pitches, and see how it goes," manager Scott Servais said.
Servais said Iwakuma will make at least two rehab starts. Seattle is also awaiting the return of Felix Hernandez and Drew Smyly to its rotation. Hernandez is set to make another rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, as he comes back from right shoulder inflammation. Smyly has been out all season with a flexor strain in his left arm.
Worth noting
• Shortstop Jean Segura ran before Tuesday's game against the Twins. Segura has been out since June 2 with a right high ankle sprain. Servais is still hopeful, but unsure if, Segura will join the team in its upcoming trip to Texas.
"Said about 60 percent, loosened up after the first couple," Servais said. "I know he's going to hit in the cage again today. Try to get on the field tomorrow, take some [batting practice] on the field. He did take some ground balls yesterday, as well. He feels good. Not at 100 percent, obviously, but it's moving in the right direction."
