SEATTLE -- Kyle Seager, who has played more games than anyone for the Mariners this year and by far the most games of any third baseman in the Majors over the past six seasons, was sidelined Tuesday by a stomach virus.
Seager played in 116 of Seattle's first 120 games this year, sitting out a game on July 5 against Royals lefty Jason Vargas and missing three games in April with a sore hip. But he's been an ironman among MLB's third baseman over the years.
Since 2012, his first full year as a starter, Seager has started 882 games at the hot corner. Next closest among third baseman in the Majors in that span is Chase Headley with 782 starts, followed by Evan Longoria with 753 and Adrian Beltre at 745.
But Seager came out of Monday night's 11-3 loss to the Orioles in the sixth inning and was expected to miss all of Tuesday's game, with Danny Espinosa getting the start at third base.
"He hasn't felt good the last couple days," manager Scott Servais said prior to Tuesday's contest. "It's one of the reasons we took him out of the game last night. We sent him to the doctor and hoping we can get it calmed down."
Seager has gone 0-for-7 over the last two games, but otherwise he has heated up in the second half as he's batted .272 with 10 doubles, eight homers, 15 RBIs and 18 runs in 30 games since the All-Star break.

Phelps could return on road trip
Reliever David Phelps, who went on the 10-day disabled list on Aug. 7 with an elbow issue, continues to play catch without any pain and could be ready to throw a bullpen session this weekend in St. Petersburg, Fla., according to Servais.
"He continues to move in a positive direction," Servais said. "Probably when we get to Tampa, he'll throw off the mound there. And if that goes well, we could see him activated pretty quickly."
Phelps, acquired from the Marlins in a July 28 deal, said "I'm not far away" after playing light catch on Tuesday.
"I've been throwing for five days without problem and just progressing," he said. "So we went nice and light at 60 feet today and I'll go back to long toss tomorrow and start spinning some stuff and see where we're at."
Worth noting
• Servais hasn't set the Mariners' rotation beyond Wednesday's series finale against the Orioles. With an off-day on Thursday prior to a 12-game East Coast road trip, the Mariners want to see how new starter Andrew Albers performs Tuesday night before firming up their pitching plans for the trip.
• Hisashi Iwakuma played catch again Tuesday, but Servais said he had no update on the veteran right-hander, who has been struggling with a shoulder issue and hasn't pitched for the Mariners since May 3.
