Martin tweaks hamstring, exits Mariners' win

May 26th, 2016

SEATTLE -- Leonys Martin continued his recent hot streak with an RBI single in the third inning of the Mariners' 13-3 win over the A's on Wednesday, but the center fielder was taken out the following frame after hurting his left hamstring while running the bases.
The Mariners said Martin "tweaked" the hamstring and is listed as day to day. The team is off on Thursday before resuming its homestand on Friday against the Twins.
"He's going to have it checked out tomorrow morning," manager Scott Servais said. "I don't think it's anything too serious, but we want to be cautious. It's still relatively early in the year.
"It's tough when he's playing as well as he is. He's really sparked us here from the leadoff spot and how he's swinging the bat. It's a little discouraging, but I don't think it's anything too serious. We'll have a better idea later in the day tomorrow."

Martin, who hit a two-run walk-off homer to beat the A's on Tuesday, has been red-hot over the past week and was promoted to the Mariners' leadoff spot the past four games. He went 1-for-2 with an RBI and stolen base on Wednesday before being removed, putting him at 15-for-30 with six walks, seven RBIs and four home runs during a nine-game hitting streak.
Martin said he felt the leg tighten up as he slid into second on the stolen base.
"They decided to take me out of the game to be smart," he said. "But I hope to be back in a few days. We've got a day off tomorrow and we'll see. This is the first time I've had this happen, but it'll be all right."
The 28-year-old was acquired from Texas in an offseason trade to bolster Seattle's defense and has emerged as one of the team's catalysts with his recent surge as he's hitting .262 with 20 RBIs, a team-leading eight stolen bases and a career-high nine home runs in his 44 games.
Martin gave Seattle a 2-1 lead with his run-scoring single in the third, kickstarting a six-run inning against A's first-time starter Zach Neal. He then stole second before limping into third on an RBI single by Seth Smith.
Trainers checked on Martin at that point, but he stayed in the game and was caught in a rundown between third and home moments later on a double-play grounder by Robinson Cano. Shawn O'Malley then replaced Martin in center field the following inning.
"He just said it was a little cramp or whatever," Servais said. "He wanted to stay in the game, but you could see it wasn't good when he got caught in the rundown and we just got him out of there. Stuff happens. High-strung, really good athletes, quick-twitch guys like that, that can happen."
