SEATTLE -- A Mariners team already rocked by injuries to its starting rotation took a pair of potential hits to its lineup when designated hitter Nelson Cruz and shortstop Jean Segura both were taken out of Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Rockies, though manager Scott Servais said the club won't know how serious either situation is until further tests are completed.
Cruz, who leads the AL with 42 RBIs, was replaced at designated hitter in the fifth inning after being hit in the right hand in his third-inning at-bat on an 89-mph fastball by Colorado rookie starter Kyle Freeland.
Segura, who came into the day with the highest batting average in the AL, was removed in the fourth inning after injuring his right ankle sliding into second base.

"With Cruz, we're hopeful it's not a broken bone or anything, but we don't know on that yet," Servais said. "Segura twisted his ankle and he's getting other tests done and we'll know more [Friday]. I'm hopeful the guys aren't out for an extended period of time. We certainly need them.
"But injuries happen. We've dealt with it all year and we'll deal with this if we lose the guys. But I'm hopeful it'll only be a day-to-day thing with both those guys. We'll just have to wait and see."
The Mariners already have 10 players on the disabled list, and they have been minus four of their five expected starting pitchers for the past month, though James Paxton returned Wednesday and threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
But Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma will be sidelined for several more weeks, Drew Smyly is likely out until July and outfielder Mitch Haniger has also missed the past five weeks with an oblique strain and isn't expected back until mid-June as well.
Should Cruz and Segura be out for any length of time, that would be a considerable blow to Seattle's offense.

Cruz took first base after being hit, but he was replaced in his next at-bat by Boog Powell. Cruz is batting .277 with 12 home runs and was the leading vote-getter at DH in the first round of AL All-Star balloting revealed this week.
Segura, batting .341 after going 0-for-2 with a walk in his first three plate appearances, was hurt as he tried to advance to second on a sacrifice fly by Danny Valencia that scored Ben Gamel from third.
Segura was out on the play as Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado cut off the throw home by left fielder Gerardo Parra and fired to second baseman DJ LeMahieu in time to make the tag for the third out of the inning.
Segura stayed down at second base after the tag and had to be helped off the field by Mariners athletic trainer Rob Nodine and first-base coach Casey Candaele.
Segura, acquired from the D-backs last winter in a trade that sent Taijuan Walker to Arizona, has been one of the Mariners' bright spots in the leadoff role. He did miss 12 games in April with a strained right hamstring, but he has hit .347 with 10 doubles, three home runs and 17 RBIs in 35 games since returning on April 26.
"We can't control injuries," Servais said. "Guys are playing really hard. Our guys are in a good spot, competing really well, and that's all we can ask of them. If Cruz and Segura are out for a few days, that gives opportunity and other guys will step up. We'll do the best with what we've got and go out and compete.
"I do believe in our guys and they know where we're at. Nobody is going to feel sorry. We're through the feeling sorry for ourselves. That's over. That's behind us. We'll have a good weekend and go out and get after it."
