Mariners, Northwest Harvest team up for annual Fight Hunger Day
Annual food drive scheduled for Saturday, June 8, vs. New York Yankees
The Seattle Mariners are once again joining with 97.3KIRO FM and Northwest Harvest for the annual food and donations drive at Safeco Field known as Fight Hunger Day.
On Saturday, June 8, when the Mariners take on the New York Yankees, volunteers will be outside all the entrances to the ballpark accepting donations of cash and non-perishable food items starting at 11:00 a.m. Game time vs. the Yankees is 1:10 p.m. Donations are also being accepted online at www.northwestharvest.org. There is also a text option by sending "ENDHUNGER" to 80888 to make a $10 donation to Northwest Harvest (the charge will be added to your phone bill).
In Washington, one in 4 kids doesn't get enough to eat and during the summer months they don't have school meal programs to rely on. Every 22 cents donated will allow Northwest Harvest to provide a meal to a hungry child. Just 67 cents will feed an entire family this summer.
"Your donation during Mariners Fight Hunger Day will help fill food bank shelves across Washington," said Andrea Flatley, communications manager for Northwest Harvest. "Full shelves mean full bellies and that will give kids the energy to play ball this summer, allowing all of them the opportunity to dream big."
Suggested non-perishable food donations include oatmeal, whole grain pasta, canned vegetables, canned fruit, fish or meat, shelf-stable milk, baby formula, infant cereal, jarred baby food, powdered or canned milk.
Northwest Harvest is the only non-profit food bank distributor operating statewide in Washington with a network of more than 350 food banks, meal programs and high-need schools. Through the network, Northwest Harvest provides more than 1.7 million meals every month.
With distribution centers in western, eastern, coastal and central Washington, Northwest Harvest reaches rural communities where people in need would otherwise go hungry. Northwest Harvest distributed more than 26 million pounds of food last year, setting a distribution record.
