OAKLAND -- The Mariners outrighted the contract of right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, which opens a spot on the club's 40-man roster for future use.
Wieland is 1-3 with a 17.31 ERA in his first five starts for Tacoma. He cleared waivers and remains in the organization, with his next start scheduled for Wednesday for the Rainiers.
The Mariners' 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
Wieland was acquired from the Dodgers in a January trade for Minor League infielder Erick Mejia. The 26-year-old went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his first two starts for Tacoma, but he's given up 22 earned runs on 24 hits with eight walks in just four innings over his past three outings.
Wieland has some Major League experience, having pitched 11 games -- including nine starts -- with the Padres from 2012-14 and the Dodgers in '15, posting a 1-5 record and a 5.85 ERA.
Wieland was a well-regarded prospect after being drafted in the fourth round by the Rangers in 2008, but he's had to deal with Tommy John surgery in 2012 and arthroscopic elbow surgery in '14. He is 46-30 with a 3.82 ERA in 122 Minor League games.
