Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
· Ryan Weber, RHP, returned from rehab assignment, activated from 60-day DL and outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
· Zac Curtis, LHP, claimed off waivers by Philadelphia.
Seattle's Major League (40-man) roster remains full at 40 players.
Weber, 26, was removed from the game during the 4th inning on May 13 at Toronto with right shoulder tightness and was placed on the DL the next day with a right biceps strain. He has remained on the 60-day DL since May 15, making one rehab appearance with Peoria on Sept. 3 (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO). Prior to joining Seattle he was 2-0 with a 0.85 ERA (3 ER, 31.2 IP) with 19 strikeouts and 4 walks in 6 games (5 starts) with AAA Tacoma this season. At the time of his selection he led the Pacific Coast League in ERA with a mark of 0.85. He was outrighted to AAA Tacoma on Dec. 2, 2016 after being claimed off waivers from Atlanta on Nov. 2 of last year. He went 1-1 with a 5.45 ERA (22 ER, 36.1 IP) in 16 games (2 starts) with Atlanta last season, striking out 23. In 26 games (5 starts) with AAA Gwinnett in 2016, he was 2-3 with a 2.76 ERA (19 ER, 62.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 14 walks.
The native of St. Petersburg, FL, was drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of St. Petersburg College. He made his Major League debut with Atlanta on Sept. 8, 2015 at Philadelphia. In parts of 2 seasons with the Braves, he has compiled a career record of 1-4 with a 5.00 ERA (38 ER, 68.1 IP) with 42 strikeouts and 11 walks in 22 games (8 starts). Over parts of 9 minor league seasons with Atlanta (2009-16) and Seattle (2017), Weber is 35-36 with a 3.64 ERA (271 ER, 670.2 IP) with 481 strikeouts and 110 walks in 210 games (82 starts).
Curtis, 25, appeared in three games in two stints with Seattle, going 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 4.2 IP) with 2 strikeouts. He spent most of the season with AA Arkansas, going 1-2 with a 3.51 ERA (20 ER, 51.1 IP) with 60 strikeouts in 41 relief appearances. In his first 32 relief appearances with the Travelers, he posted a 2.03 ERA (9 ER, 40.0 IP) with 49 strikeouts before posting an 8.74 ERA (11 ER, 11.1 IP) with 11 strikeouts in his final nine appearances.
The native of Panama City Beach, FL, Curtis was originally selected by Arizona in the 6th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Middle Tennessee State University. He made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks last season. Curtis was acquired from Arizona along with INF Jean Segura and OF Mitch Haniger in exchange for RHP Taijuan Walker and INF Ketel Marte on Nov. 23, 2016. In parts of 4 minor league seasons with Arizona (2014-16) and Seattle (2017), he has compiled a career record of 8-8 with 66 saves and a 2.44 ERA (44 ER, 162.1 IP) in 145 games.
