Mariners re-sign catcher Chris Gimenez to Major League deal
Gimenez had been non-tendered Monday
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik today announced that the Mariners have signed catcher Chris Gimenez to a Major League contract.
Gimenez was non-tendered on Monday, Dec. 12, making him a free agent eligible to negotiate with any of the 30 Major League teams, including Seattle.
With today’s transaction, the Mariners 40-man roster is now at 37 players.
“We had every intention of re-signing Chris,” Zduriencik said. “There was just some procedural stuff that required us to non-tender him before we negotiated a new deal for 2012.”
Gimenez, 28 (turns 29 Dec. 27), appeared in 24 games for the Mariners in 2011, making starts at three different positions (C, 1B, LF). He hit .203 (12x59) with 1 home run and 6 RBI. He missed over two months of the season (June 29-Sept. 1) with a strained left oblique.
