Mariners recall RHP Emilio Pagan from AAA Tacoma

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have recalled right-handed pitcher Emilio Pagan from AAA Tacoma. To make room on the Major League, 25-man, roster right-handed pitcher Tyler Cloyd has been optioned to AAA Tacoma.

SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have recalled right-handed pitcher Emilio Pagan from AAA Tacoma. To make room on the Major League, 25-man, roster right-handed pitcher Tyler Cloyd has been optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Pagan (#54) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 p.m. PT) game vs. the Toronto Blue Jays at Safeco Field.
Pagan, 26, is in his third stint with Seattle this season (also: May 22-24 & May 2-6). He tossed 4.0 shutout innings in relief May 23 vs. the Nationals, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 4. During his first stint with Seattle (May 2-6), he went 0-1 with a 16.88 ERA (5 ER, 2.2 IP) with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in 2 relief appearances. He was 1-1 with 2 saves and a 3.38 ERA (9 ER, 24.0 IP) with 27 strikeouts in 15 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma. In parts of 5 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, Pagan has compiled a record of 12-16 with 48 saves and a 2.52 ERA (70 ER, 249.2 IP) with 296 strikeouts in 160 career appearances, all in relief. He made 2 scoreless relief appearances with Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic this spring, tossing a scoreless frame against Team Venezuela on March 18 and blanking Team USA in the 9th inning of the Championship Game on March 22. The native of Greenville, SC, was originally selected by the Mariners in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, NC).
Cloyd, 30, made one appearance with the Mariners after being selected from Tacoma on June 2: he was the winning pitcher in last night's 4-2 victory over the Jays after tossing 1.0 shutout inning. Cloyd was 1-0 with a 1.10 ERA (2 ER, 16.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts in 4 starts with AAA Tacoma after having his contract purchased from the independent Atlantic League. He signed a minor league contract with Seattle on May 12 and was assigned to Tacoma. With the Somerset Patriots, he opened the season going 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER, 12.0 IP) in three starts in the Atlantic League. In 2016, he opened the season with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the New York-AL organization where he was 1-1 with a 1.37 ERA (3 ER, 19.2 IP) in 4 games including 3 starts before being placed on the 7-day minor league disabled list on April 25 with a right elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.
In parts of 2 Major League seasons with Philadelphia (2012-13), was 4-9, 5.98 ERA (62 ER, 93.1 IP) with 71 strikeouts in 19 games, 17 starts. In 9 minor league seasons with Philadelphia (2008-13), Cleveland (2014), New York-AL (2016) and Seattle (2017), he has combined to go 65-40 with a 3.48 ERA (366 ER, 947.2 IP) with 751 strikeouts in 189 games including 144 starts. He spent the 2015 season with the Samsung Lions of the Korean Baseball Organization. He was selected by Philadelphia in the 18th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the Univ. of Nebraska, Omaha (2006-07) where he was a two-time All-North Central Conference honoree and was twice named NCC Most Valuable Pitcher.
