Furbush reinstated from 60-day disabled list

Reliever expects to be healthy for start of Spring Training

SEATTLE -- Mariners left-handed reliever Charlie Furbush was moved off the 60-day disabled list Thursday and reinstated to the 40-man roster, a move required by Friday for any player who is being retained by his club over the offseason.

Furbush went on the disabled list on July 9 with tendinitis in his left biceps and later was diagnosed with a slight rotator cuff tear. Doctors determined he didn't need surgery, and he's been doing physical therapy and conditioning since the final month of the regular season while building the shoulder back up.

Furbush expects to be ready to start throwing his normal offseason program this winter and to be fully ready to go by Spring Training in February.

The 29-year-old has been one of the Mariners' top relievers the past few years and had a 2.08 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .122 average in 21 2/3 innings over 33 appearances before going on the DL.

Furbush held left-handed hitters to a .105 batting average with no extra-base hits in 38 at-bats. He didn't allow any of the 16 runners he inherited to score, and opposing batters were 1-for-18 (.056) with runners in scoring position.

Furbush also was the Mariners' nominee for the 2015 Roberto Clemente Award, which goes to a player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field.

The Mariners' 40-man roster stands at 38 after three players -- Hisashi Iwakuma, Joe Beimel and Franklin Gutierrez -- became free agents on Monday.
