Cano ready to return from DL on Tuesday

May 21st, 2017

SEATTLE -- Mariners second baseman said he's on target to come off the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday as scheduled, as the seven-time All-Star continues recovering from a strained quadricep muscle in his right leg.
Cano went through a full pregame routine prior to Saturday's game against the White Sox, taking batting practice and fielding ground balls.
"I've got to run the bases [on Sunday], but I feel good," Cano said.
The 34-year-old hasn't played since May 10, but is eligible to come off the DL when Seattle opens an eight-game road trip against the Nationals in Washington on Tuesday.
"Everything is moving in the right direction," manager Scott Servais said. "He picked it up some [Friday] and feels good."
Haniger also progressing again
Rookie outfielder Mitch Haniger could also rejoin the Mariners at some point in their next road trip. After a small setback when he felt some tightness in his side after an extensive workout Thursday, Haniger did some hitting and light work Saturday and Servais said he could go out on a Minor League rehab in the next day or two.
"You're always a little concerned when there's a little setback," Servais said. "But I talked to him and he said he was actually trying to compensate a little bit and make sure he didn't do too much with that side, so it was actually the other side that got a little sore."
Haniger initially was going to report to Class A Advanced Modesto, but Servais said he's not sure where the 26-year-old would head now once he's cleared for his rehab assignment.
Worth noting
• Left-hander is the closest of the Mariners' five injured starters to returning. He'll throw his second bullpen session since going on the DL with a strained forearm on Sunday, then head out on a rehab assignment and make one start late next week before likely rejoining the Mariners at the start of their next homestand.
(shoulder), (shoulder) and Drew Smyly (elbow) all had scheduled days off Saturday, but will resume their throwing programs by playing flat-ground catch again Sunday.
, the fifth starter to go on the DL after he strained his right bicep while making his first start last Saturday in Toronto, remains shut down from all throwing until his injury quiets down.
• First baseman Danny Valencia was sidelined Saturday by a sore wrist that he injured sliding into third base with a triple in the second inning of Friday's game. Valencia stayed in for all 10 innings of that contest, but was replaced at first on Saturday by . Utility infielder took over at second base, where Motter had been filling in for Cano the past eight games.
