Mariners select INF Chris Taylor & recall DH/1B Jesus Montero from AAA Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced the following roster moves:

·       Chris Taylor, INF, selected from AAA Tacoma

·       Jesus Montero, DH/1B, recalled from AAA Tacoma

·       Willie Bloomquist, UTL, placed on 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion

·       Taijuan Walker, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma (post-game 7/23)

Taylor, 23, will be making his Major League debut tonight starting at shortstop and batting 9th in the lineup in the series opener vs. the Baltimore Orioles (7:10 pm, Safeco Field). He will wear jersey #1 in his MLB debut.

In 75 game with AAA Tacoma Taylor hit .328 (99x302) with 63 runs scored, 22 doubles, 7 triples, 5 home runs and 37 RBI. Among Pacific Coast League leaders he is 2nd in batting average, T4th in runs scored and T3rd in triples. Taylor went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles in the AAA All-Star Game to earn Top Star honors for the Pacific Coast League. Taylor is batting .347 (26x75) over his last 19 games.

Originally selected by the Mariners in the 5th round of the 2012 June Draft out of the University of Virginia, Taylor has combined to bat .320 (323x1,010) with 96 extra-base hits (2B-62, 3B-19, HR-15) and 119 RBI in 258 games. He has appeared almost exclusively at shortstop (192 G) and second base (54 G) during his minor league career.

Montero, 24, returns to the Mariners roster for the second time this season. In 5 games with the Mariners in June he hit .286 (4x14) with 1 home run and 2 RBI. He is batting .310 (94x303) with 23 doubles, 15 home runs and 69 RBI in 80 games with the Rainiers. In 21 games since being optioned back to the minors on June 25 has hit .420 (34x81) with 8 doubles, 7 home runs and 29 RBI (1.238 OPS).

Bloomquist, 36, was injured while legging out an RBI groundout in the 8th inning in Wednesday's 3-2 loss vs. the New York Mets. In 47 games this season he is batting .278 (37x133) while playing seven different positions (SS-16 G/12 GS, 2B-10 G/6 GS, 1B-7 G/5 GS, 3B-5 G/5 GS, LF-3 G/3 GS, DH-1 G/1 GS, RF-1 G/0 GS).
