SEATTLE -- Utility man Shawn O'Malley, who has been dealing with injuries almost all season, cleared waivers and was outrighted by the Mariners to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.
O'Malley was designated for assignment on Saturday to open a 40-man roster spot for veteran infielder James Beckham, who is one of seven September callups now on the Major League roster.
O'Malley is no long on the 40-man roster, and Tacoma's season is done, but he remains in the Mariners' organization. The 29-year-old from Richland, Wash., played 20 games for Tacoma while rehabbing from shoulder surgery and hit .205 with three doubles, one home run and five RBIs in 78 at-bats.
O'Malley was competing for a spot on the Mariners' Opening Day roster in Spring Training when he had to undergo an appendectomy in March, and he later had surgery to repair his shoulder.
O'Malley hit .229 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 89 games with the Mariners last year after signing with the club in 2015 following two seasons in the Angels' organization.
