TORONTO -- Mariners starter Wade Miley made one mistake on Sunday afternoon, and it proved to be the difference in a 2-0 loss to the Blue Jays.
The 29-year-old slipped on his delivery of an 0-1 fastball to Edwin Encarnacion in the fourth, and the All-Star made Miley pay, putting the ball over the center-field wall to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
"I kind of slipped a little bit. I was trying to go up and away and I fell down," Miley said of the pitch to Encarnacion. "Somehow it ended up middle-middle and he crushed it. I didn't think I was going to be able to throw anywhere near the plate when it happened, of course it went right down the middle, but that's part of it, it happens.
"Normally when you slip a little bit, the ball does not go anywhere near where you want it to; obviously I didn't want it to go down the middle, I was trying to go up and away, and he hammered it."

Miley (6-8, 5.23 ERA) went six innings, surrendering two earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking two for his sixth straight loss. The left-hander earned his seventh quality start and has now tossed at least six innings in 12 of his 18 starts this season. The two earned runs marked the sixth time this season he's allowed two runs or fewer in a start.
"I thought it was a great start for Wade, it's one of those things I mean, heck, he only gave up two runs to this club, and it's a great lineup," said catcher Mike Zunino. "It's one of those things where it's tough to take these losses, but I thought he threw great, I thought the bullpen threw great, and it's one of those where the lineup didn't back up the pitching staff."
Miley allowed three earned runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings his previous start, on July 19 against the White Sox, but he felt it was a better outing than his loss to the Blue Jays.
"Something to build off of, again," he said. "Going in the right direction. Felt like I wasn't quite as sharp as I was in the last outing, but I was able to make some pitches and get out of most of the jams."
