ST. PETERSBURG -- Mark Canha has been diagnosed with a left hip impingement that could result in season-ending surgery for the A's infielder/outfielder.
Canha will seek a second opinion from Dr. Marc Philippon in Colorado, after the A's recommended he get a cortisone shot before determining if surgery is necessary.
Canha was placed on the disabled list Tuesday and sent home from Boston for MRIs on both his hip and back; A's head trainer Nick Paparesta said there is no labral damage to Canha's hip, and that he has a light back strain.
The 27-year-old Canha, who totaled 16 home runs and 70 RBIs as a rookie last season, has seen limited playing time this year, batting .122 with three home runs in 41 at-bats spanning 16 games.

• Right-hander Liam Hendriks (right triceps strain) underwent an MRI that revealed no structural damage to his elbow. He's expected to rest for several days before being reexamined Monday.
• Second baseman Jed Lowrie, sidelined by a right shin contusion, is off crutches and out of a walking boot but has yet to resume baseball activity. He's eligible to return from the DL on May 25.
• Right-hander R.J. Alvarez, who underwent minor elbow surgery in March, is playing catch out to 105 feet and could be throwing off a mound sometime during the team's next homestand, according to Paparesta.
