Trumbo knows success vs. Astros' Keuchel

HOUSTON -- Not many Major League hitters have had much success recently against Astros ace Dallas Keuchel, but Mariners first baseman Mark Trumbo seems to have found some answers. Trumbo became the first player to homer off Keuchel at Minute Maid Park in his last 17 starts in a two-homer game in Seattle's 8-3 loss on Monday night.

Trumbo provided all of Seattle's runs with his 2-for-4 day as he hiked his season home run total to 19, including 10 with the Mariners since being acquired from the D-backs on June 3.

Trumbo has gone 6-for-13 with a double, two triples and three homers in his career against Keuchel, with two of the long balls coming this season, including one at Safeco Field in a 6-3 win on June 20.

"I've got a few pitches I can work with from him, but he's got me quite a few times, too," Trumbo said. "I feel fortunate that I have had a few decent at-bats, at least."

Trumbo's solo shot in the second gave Seattle some early life and tied the game at 1 as he caught a first-pitch fastball and drove it to the opposite field, with Statcast™ projecting the ball to land 429 feet from home plate.

"Each at-bat is a grind against him," Trumbo said. "I was fortunate I got a pitch I could work with in a situation where I was going to be aggressive. That time, it paid off."

It was the first home run off Keuchel in his home park since Adrian Beltre of the Rangers took him deep on Aug. 10, 2014, a span of 122 2/3 innings.

"Yeah, that was surprising, but Trumbo's hit me well," Keuchel said. "I seem to leave a lot of pitches down the middle for him, and that's what good hitters do. I guess I have to start another streak. I didn't have any idea I hadn't given up a homer in [that long] here. But it was a good pitch for him to hit, and he hit it a long ways."

Trumbo hit another -- a two-run blast -- off reliever Oliver Perez in the ninth for Seattle's final runs. Though he got off to a slow start with the Mariners, Trumbo is batting .303 with nine homers and 23 RBIs over his last 45 games to hike his season numbers to .248 with 10 homers and 28 RBIs in 67 games for Seattle.
