BALTIMORE -- Mark Trumbo homered twice to back starter Chris Tillman's seven strong innings as the Orioles beat the Yankees, 4-1, and moved back into first place in the American League East on Tuesday night at Camden Yards.
After hitting a leadoff homer off Yankees starter Luis Severino in the second, Trumbo belted a two-run shot into the left-field seats in the fifth.
"Unfortunately, I've been on teams that are down and you want to take care of business," Trumbo said of the win. "You want to rack up the wins when you can. If a team is unfortunately scuffling, you want to be at your best to capitalize on those opportunities."
Severino allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings, striking out four, as the Yankees lost their sixth straight game.
Tillman held the struggling Yankees (8-16) to one run on five hits and turned in his second consecutive nine-strikeout start. Tillman, who was the Orioles' Opening Day starter, improved to 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA.
"At times, we haven't scored runs. At times, we haven't pitched particularly well," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's been a combination of things, but we've got to turn it around. We can't feel sorry for ourselves, we can't worry about where you are in the standings. There's a long way to go."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Trum-bomb: The Orioles' right-fielder continued his red-hot start to the season, as Trumbo swelled his home run total to eight. He has a team-leading 22 RBIs, with Tuesday his second multihomer game this season and ninth of his career.

"That was more reaction," Trumbo said of the pair of blasts. "Two pitches I maybe normally don't handle quite as well ended up working out today." More >
"Luis, Luis, oh no:" Potentially pitching to keep his spot in the big league rotation, Severino didn't help his cause with two fat pitches to Trumbo. The right-hander also hurt himself with shoddy fielding on two plays covering first base. Severino worked around a second-inning error on a dropped throw, but he then repeated the miscue fielding a toss from Mark Teixeira on Ryan Flaherty's grounder in the fourth as Jonathan Schoop raced home.

"Totally my fault. That was an easy play over there," Severino said. "I have to make that play. I was trying to hurry too much. I looked at the bag and not catching the ball first." More >
Tillman in a groove: The righty gave Baltimore just its second seven-inning start this season, and it looks like he's zeroing in at just the right time. Tillman has allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts, a 19 2/3-inning stretch. He's struck out 22 over that span.

"I think he's carrying a little more stuff -- curveball, slider, changeup, all three were there for him and [catcher] Matt [Wieters] was aware of it," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "Sometimes he'll go an inning or two without certain things, like command of the fastball, and then all of sudden it will lock back in." More >
A-Rod ailing: Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez was pulled from the game for pinch-hitter Dustin Ackley in the eighth inning after injuring his right hamstring while running out a fifth-inning ground ball and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

"I feel sore," Rodriguez said. "Hopefully the good news is that I wasn't running very fast. We'll see what happens." More >

"I've just been consistent with my delivery, and I think that's helping a lot. When I've struggled in the past, I've kind of gotten out of my delivery a little bit and have struggled to get back in it. I think tonight was a good example of me having to make an adjustment early. It wasn't where I wanted to be, and it kind of stayed that way throughout, but we were able to make some pitches, some big pitches with the fastball to kind of get through that, and the offspeed kind of got me through that." -- Tillman, on his 110-pitch outing

At 8-16, the Yankees are eight games under .500 for the first time in the Joe Girardi era (2008-present). They have been outscored by a 37-to-13 margin during their current six-game losing streak.
"I think everything is magnified when it's this early in the season," Brett Gardner said. "If it was June or July and we were going through this, it would be a little bit different. We get an opportunity every day to come back and try to right the ship."

Yankees: Left-hander CC Sabathia (1-2, 5.06 ERA) is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET, as the Yankees and Orioles play the second game of this three-game series. He is coming off a loss to the Rangers in which he allowed three runs and five hits over six innings.
Orioles: Rookie Tyler Wilson will make his third start of the season on Wednesday against the Yankees. Wilson, inserted into the rotation due to Yovani Gallardo's injury, started the season in the bullpen and is 1-0 with a 3.06 ERA on the season.
