Hechavarria sneaks up on Rockies

DENVER -- Although he's known primarily for his defensive gems as part of the Marlins' heralded double-play combo, Adeiny Hechavarria can still step outside that and deliver some of his "sneaky power."

He did so on Sunday when Miami needed it most, crushing a go-ahead homer off reliever Boone Logan in the 10th to hand the Marlins a 3-2 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field.

"Normally, I have power, but that's not my game," Hechavarria said through an interpreter. "My game is just to focus on hitting the ball up the middle the other way, and occasionally, I hit some balls far."

It was just Hechavarria's ninth career home run and first since April 25. Entering the 10th, the Marlins shortstop was averaging only one long ball every 175 at-bats.

But that didn't matter after Logan hung him a slider, and Hechavarria launched it into the center-field vegetation -- the homer projected by Statcast™ to land 422 feet away.

"He's got sneaky power, and to put up the numbers that he's put up so far in the eighth hole has been absolutely amazing," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "He gives you quality at-bats, and he battles. You're going to have to get him out because he's going to battle all the way through that at-bat."
