MIAMI -- With Miguel Rojas (fractured right thumb) and Adeiny Hechavarria (left oblique strain) on the disabled list, the Marlins added some organizational infield depth on Tuesday by claiming infielder Christian Colon off waivers from the Royals. Infielder Steve Lombardozzi was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.
Colon, 28, is expected to report to Triple-A New Orleans, and he can play shortstop, third base and second.
The fourth overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, Colon's big league highlight is delivering the deciding RBI hit in the 12th inning of Game 5 of the 2015 World Series, when the Royals clinched the title with a win over the Mets.
But in Kansas City, Colon was never able to get his big league career going. Colon went 3-for-17 (.176) with a walk and a run scored in seven games for the Royals this season. He batted .231 with one home run and 13 RBIs in 54 games for Kansas City in 2016.
Lombardozzi, 28, played in two games for the Marlins, going hitless in eight at-bats. His last full season came with the Nationals in 2013, when he batted .259 with two home runs and 22 RBIs in 118 games.
The Marlins are hopeful Lombardozzi will clear waivers and rejoin New Orleans.
