Gordon avoids baserunning gaffe on final play

MIAMI -- Martin Prado delivered the thrilling sacrifice fly. J.T. Realmuto dashed home with the decisive run, and Dee Gordon nearly made a costly mental mistake.

So much was involved in an emotionally-driven play that gave the Marlins' a 4-3 walk-off win over the Mets on Sunday at Marlins Park. Fortunately for Miami, the play ended with a celebration.

Lost in the hysteria was Gordon scrambling back to second to avoid being doubled up. An assist goes to third-base coach Lenny Harris, who noticed Gordon didn't tag up on the fly ball to left.

If the Mets had picked up on this earlier, they could have thrown to second base, and doubled up Gordon, which would have ended the inning, regardless of the fact Realmuto had slid home.

Prado had a 12-pitch battle with Tyler Clippard that ended with a line drive to Yoenis Cespedes, who was playing short in left field. Cespedes made a nice leaping catch and Gordon was running towards third as Realmuto tagged and raced home.

Cespedes made a strong throw home, but Realmuto slid in easily.

However, as that was occurring, Harris was waving Gordon back to second, and he slid back in. Juan Uribe, playing third, even motioned to catcher Anthony Recker to throw to second. By then, Gordon was back safely.
