Keep Gordon in lead before ASG voting ends

MIAMI -- Dee Gordon, one of the fastest players in the game, is running away from the pack in the race for the National League All-Star second-base spot. The Marlins speedster holds a commanding lead over St. Louis' Kolten Wong in the final stages of the voting process on the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot.

Gordon is seeking to become the first Miami position player to be voted in as a starter since Hanley Ramirez was selected by the fans three straight seasons (2008-10). Giancarlo Stanton also remains in second place among outfielders, but the Marlins slugger won't be able to participate due to his broken left hand.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on their computers, tablets and smartphones -- using the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot until Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET. For the first time, voting is exclusively online, where fans may submit up to 35 ballots.

Gordon leads the NL in batting average (.353) and hits (112), and he's second in stolen bases (26).

In the latest tally, Gordon has 6,316,113 votes, with Wong at 4,730,848. Still, until the voting concludes on Thursday, nothing is official.

Along with his productive offense, Gordon has played at a Gold Glove-level defensively. The Marlins feel they have the best double-play combination in the NL with Gordon at second and Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop. Hechavarria, however, is not among the top five in the fan votes at his position.

"I know Dee is getting a lot of hype and votes for the All-Star Game, but you can't look past Hechavarria," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "He is All-Star-quality."

Stanton, the Major League leader in home runs (27) and running second in RBIs (67), has 6,062,318 votes, which is second to Washington's Bryce Harper (11,363,949). However, last Friday, Stanton broke the hamate bone at the base of his left hand, and he underwent surgery on Sunday. Stanton was planning to also participate in the 2015 Gillette Home Run Derby presented by Head & Shoulders, but he is now out four to six weeks.

The 2015 All-Star starters will be unveiled on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET on the Esurance All-Star Starters Selection Show on ESPN. Then on Monday at 7 p.m. ET, the All-Star reserves, pitchers and Final Vote candidates will be announced on the Esurance All-Star Selection Show on ESPN, immediately after which fans can return to MLB.com to begin casting their 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Final Votes for the final player for each league's All-Star roster. Final Vote ends Friday, July 10, at 4 p.m. ET. On Tuesday, July 14, watch the 2015 All-Star Game live on FOX, and during the game visit MLB.com to submit your choice for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet via the 2015 MLB All-Star Game MVP Vote.
