ST. PETERSBURG -- Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton was kept out of the lineup Wednesday at Tropicana Field with right side soreness.
Miami manager Don Mattingly said Stanton experienced the soreness sometime during the Marlins' loss to the Rays on Tuesday in Miami. Mattingly saw Stanton, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and one strikeout in the defeat, tugging on his right side early in the game. Mattingly said the soreness wasn't a result of Stanton's final at-bat, which resulted in a groundout to third base in the seventh inning.
Ichiro Suzuki, who has been handling left field the past few days with Christian Yelich hurt, started in right field on Wednesday in Stanton's absence. Cole Gillespie started in left.
"He didn't really say that it came from any one thing," Mattingly said of Stanton. "I just noticed him early in the game kind of tugging on it, rubbing on it. ... This is something that, hopefully, it's not something major, it's a day or two."
Stanton, 26, has hit .214 with 12 home runs and 26 RBIs in 43 games this season. He has struggled at the plate in May, hitting .173 in 75 at-bats.

Mattingly said Stanton experienced the same soreness during Spring Training. The manager is hopeful that the soreness will not lead to a lengthy absence for Stanton, but more observation will be required.
"It depends what this is and how long it goes," Mattingly said. "I look at it a couple different ways. From the standpoint that it could be a day off, it doesn't really hurt. If it ends up lingering longer as it gets into time, then you look at that. ... He had a little bit of this going on in Spring Training at different times. So that's probably why I'm not that concerned."
Worth noting
• Yelich (back spasms) swung in the batting cage and ran Wednesday afternoon at Tropicana Field. Yelich, who hasn't started since last Friday against Washington, is considered day-to-day. Mattingly said he would like Yelich to be ready by the start of a three-game series at Atlanta that begins Friday.
"Feel better about where's he's at," Mattingly said. "Try to stay away from him today and see where he's at tomorrow. For us, we'd really like him to be ready by Atlanta where you can't hardly go short. ... We're going to be careful with him, but we feel like we're getting close to him back in the lineup."
• Reliever Mike Dunn (left forearm strain) allowed one hit with one strikeout in one inning for Class A Advanced Jupiter against Bradenton on Tuesday night in the first of what's expected to be at least a couple of rehab-assignment appearances for him. Without any setbacks, he could return when the Marlins host the Pirates on Monday.
