MIAMI -- The Marlins took time to honor the nation's armed forces for Memorial Day before Monday's contest against the Pirates at Marlins Park.
Military members gathered on the field, one of whom tossed the ceremonial first pitch. Then, a moment of silence was held to honor the country's troops and all who have served.
Marlins players stood alongside the third-base line during the national anthem, holding their hats across camouflage-styled jerseys, a staple among every Major League team Monday.
In the middle of the fourth inning, Marlins starting pitcher Tom Koehler personally honored three first responders near third base.
Miami relief pitcher Mike Dunn also showed his support for the armed forces. Through Dunn's "All for One and Dunn for All" program, families of the military's special operations forces gathered for on-field batting practice and pregame activities.
Every Monday home game, The Special Operations Warrior Foundation gives these families a chance to take part in activities like meet-and-greets with Dunn, along with items like tickets, T-shirts and dinner. Dunn also contributes to the foundation's scholarship fund.
Dunn has been sidelined with a left forearm strain all season, although he could be reinstated from the disabled list this week.
