Marlins lead Majors in successful challenges

HOUSTON -- Upon review, it is clear the Marlins have capitalized on MLB's replay system.

With successful challenges in each of its last two games, Miami is now a Major League-best 16-of-20 (80 percent). The Braves (12-of-16, 75 percent) and Yankees (13-of-18, 72 percent) are the next best.

In the offseason, the Marlins hired Pat Shine as their Major League administrative coordinator.

"I give Pat all the credit," Miami manager Mike Redmond said. "He's done a great job, seeing those plays and making a 15-second judgment on a couple of replays. It's not easy. He's taken a lot of pride in it. It's been a huge weapon for us, for sure."

A Marlins challenge led to an overturned call on what would have been a stolen base on Friday night by Houston's Jose Altuve. And on Thursday, replay in Atlanta overturned a play at first base to end another threat.

Miami won both of those games, with replay securing outs in the field.

"We buy Pat as much time as we can," Redmond said. "But still, he's got to be on every play. He's got 10 or 15 seconds to decide, safe or out.

"As you've seen replay go throughout the season, you kind of realize, hey, these are the plays you've got a chance to get overturned, and which ones aren't."
