Miami Marlins make 40 selections in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft

Marlins selected LHP Andrew Heaney ninth vverall; Also draft four Florida prospects

The Miami Marlins today announced their final 25 selections of Major League Baseball's 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The announcements were made by Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.

The Marlins selected 40 players over the course of the three-day Draft, including Oklahoma State University LHP Andrew Heaney with the ninth overall selection in Monday night's first round. Additionally, the Club selected four prospects hailing from Florida, led by high school product Avery Romero, a shortstop from Pedro Menendez High School (West St. Augustine), in the third round (104th overall).

Miami selected 16 right-handed pitchers overall, including 11 on the final day of the Draft. The Club also selected 10 infielders, seven outfielders, four left-handed pitchers, and three catchers.

Heaney, a junior at Oklahoma State University, was Miami's only selection on the first day of the Draft. He was the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year this season, and a Division 1 First-Team, All-American. He finished the current season with an 8-2 record and a 1.60 ERA in 15 starts. He also led the NCAA with 140 strikeouts in 118.1 innings. Heaney is an Oklahoma City native and graduated from Putnam City High School.
