MIAMI -- The Marlins are retaining Jordany Valdespin in their system. On Wednesday, the team announced the 27-year-old outfielder, who was designated for assignment last Friday, has been outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans.

Miami was anticipating keeping Valdespin on its big league roster, but those plans changed when right-hander Mat Latos was scratched from his scheduled start last Saturday due to a bruised right foot.

Miami was anticipating keeping Valdespin on its big league roster, but those plans changed when right-hander Mat Latos was scratched from his scheduled start last Saturday due to a bruised right foot.

Valdespin started in right field last Friday in a 1-0 loss to the Reds at Marlins Park, but he was designated after the game.

A left-handed hitter, Valdespin is a versatile role player, who also has experience at second and third base.

At New Orleans, Valdespin is batting .287 with 10 doubles, three triples, one home run and 16 RBIs in 60 games. He's had just four at-bats in two games with Miami.
