MIAMI -- The Marlins on Thursday optioned reliever Jarlin Garcia, ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the organization's No. 3 prospect, to Double-A Jacksonville. The left-hander was promoted to the big leagues on Sunday, but he heads back to the Minors without appearing in a Major League game.
No corresponding move was announced by the club, but during Miami's recently completed series at Philadelphia, manager Don Mattingly said right-hander Edwin Jackson was close to being reinstated from the disabled list. Jackson, 32, has been on the DL since April 19 with a right triceps strain.
Thursday's roster move leaves the Marlins once again without a left-hander in the bullpen. The Marlins are the only club in the big leagues without a southpaw.
Even with Garcia on the big league roster, the Marlins saw him as a long reliever, not a lefty to be used for matchups.
Garcia, 23, made seven starts for the Suns, posting a 4.04 ERA in 35 2/3 innings.
Jackson made two rehab assignment appearances for Class A Advanced Jupiter, throwing four innings and allowing three runs while striking out three and walking one.
On Wednesday, Jackson threw one scoreless frame for the Hammerheads.
Jackson has made four appearances for the Marlins, posting a 2.45 ERA in 3 2/3 innings. If Jackson is ready to be reinstated, he would pitch in long relief.
