MIAMI -- Adeiny Hechavarria is taking swings in the cages, but he is still not at full speed. The Marlins' shortstop, who has been on the disabled list since May 10 with a left oblique strain, remains several weeks away from returning.
Third baseman Martin Prado is in a similar situation, as he is recovering from a right hamstring strain. Manager Don Mattingly said on Friday the two are "10 days to two weeks" from going out on rehab assignments.
"[Prado] and Hech are probably in the same boat," Mattingly said. "They're starting to do some things."
Prado went on the DL on May 8, his second stint due to a right hamstring issue.
Derek Dietrich has been getting a majority of the work at third base, with J.T. Riddle filling in at shortstop.
"Martin is starting to do some stuff off the tee," Mattingly said. "Doing more warmup stuff, throwing, that type of thing. Now it's a matter of getting them ready to go out and do some things."
The fact that they are a couple of weeks away from being ready for a rehab assignment makes it likely they are each about three weeks away from rejoining the Marlins, at the earliest.
• The Marlins did receive some encouraging injury-related news. Center fielder Christian Yelich was in the starting lineup on Friday after tweaking his right hip flexor on Tuesday night in an 11-9 win at Oakland. He sat out the next day, and the Marlins were off on Thursday, allowing another day to recover.
• Jeff Locke, who has been on the DL all season due to left shoulder tendinitis, threw six shutout innings on a rehab assignment with Double-A Jacksonville on Thursday. In four rehab starts -- two with Class A Advanced Jupiter and two with Jacksonville -- Locke has a 1.77 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings. The organization is weighing if Locke needs one more rehab start or if he will be reinstated and join the rotation.
• The Marlins reinstated right-hander David Phelps from the bereavement list and optioned Drew Steckenrider to Triple-A New Orleans.
