Marisnick fortunate as hand X-rays are negative

JUPITER, Fla. -- The biggest break the Marlins received on Wednesday afternoon following a 7-2 loss to the Cardinals is that the X-rays on outfield prospect Jake Marisnick's left hand came back negative.

Marisnick, who has impressed all spring, was pegged on the back of his hand in the fifth inning by a Trevor Rosenthal fastball.

Although he initially stayed in the game to run the bases, Marisnick was replaced by Gorkys Hernandez in the bottom of the inning.

Shortly afterwards, X-rays revealed encouraging news.

"No break or anything," Marisnick said. "It hit me square on the hand. I got pretty lucky. Take it day by day. See how it feels."

Marisnick, 21, was scheduled to make the trip to Port St. Lucie on Thursday to face the Mets.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond now says the speedy outfielder will remain in Jupiter for treatment.

"It's scary," Redmond said. "You don't want anybody to get hit, especially in the hand. It looks like he's going to be fine. It looks like he's going to miss a few days. Hopefully, we dodged another bullet there."

Marisnick is the Marlins' No. 3 prospect, according to MLB.com. He is expected to open the season at Double-A Jacksonville.

Acquired from the Blue Jays in November, Marisnick is 5-for-11 (.455) in Spring Training.
