Marlins select eight players on second day of 2015 First-Year Player Draft
Rounds 3-10 kick off with high school outfielder before turning to pitchers
The Miami Marlins today selected high school outfielder Isaiah White with the first of eight picks on day two of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. The announcements were made by Marlins' Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
White (Wilson, NC), taken in Round 3 with the 85th overall pick out of the Greenfield School, was a 2015 Perfect Game 3rd Team All-American and a 1st Team selection for the Atlantic Region. According to MaxPreps.com, White batted .547 (41x75) in 21 games during his senior campaign, with 39 runs scored, 13 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 17 RBI, and 31 steals.
In Round 4 (#116 overall) the Marlins selected RHP Cody Poteet (Bonita, CA) from UCLA. Poteet, a junior, posted a 7-1 record with a 2.45 ERA (73.1 IP/20 ER) in 27 appearance (13 starts) for the Bruins this season. The Club followed with another college arm in Round 5 (#146), selecting left-hander Justin Jacome (Redlands, CA) out of the University of California-Santa Barbara. Jacome, a junior, went 7-5, 2.70 (116.2/35) in 16 starts this season.
Miami rounded out day two of the draft with catcher Justin Cohen (Sarasota, FL) out of Riverview High School in Round 6 (#176); RHP Travis Neubeck (Hugo, MN) out of Indian Hills Community College (IA) in Round 7 (#206); RHP Chris Paddack (Cedar Park, TX) out of Cedar Park HS in Round 8 (#236); RHP Reilly Hovis (Gastonia, NC) out of the University of North Carolina in Round 9 (#266); and RHP Kelvin Rivas (Guaynabo, PR) out of Oklahoma Baptist University in Round 10 (#296).
On Monday night, the Marlins made first baseman Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ONT) the first Canadian ever selected in the first round by the Club, taking him with the 12th overall pick. Naylor, 17, played his baseball with the Canadian Junior National team and the Ontario Blue Jays amateur baseball program over the last four years. He played in eight different countries around the globe with the Junior National team, and in the fall of 2013 & 2014 played against Division 1 & 2 colleges in the United States with Ontario, combining to hit .449 (83x185) in 56 games, with 15 home runs and 62 RBI. Naylor participated in the 2014 International Power Showcase Home Run Derby at Marlins Park, where he won the "Spirit of Babe Ruth" Award, presented to the participant who shows "Ability, Strength, Leadership, Passion and Respect for the game of baseball."
In Round 2 (#50) on Monday, the Marlins selected LHP Brett Lilek (South Holland, IL) from Arizona State University. Lilek, who went 4-2, 3.20 in 17 appearances (15 starts) this season as a junior, is a two-time All-Pac 12 honoree, including a first-team selection after his sophomore season (4-5, 2.68).
