The Miami Marlins today announced that the Club has signed right-handed pitcher Edinson Volquez to a two-year contract through the 2018 season. The announcement was made by Marlins' President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.

Volquez, 33, is one of just seven pitchers in Major League Baseball to have started at least 31 games in each of the last four seasons, including a career-high 34 for the Kansas City Royals in 2016. Over the last three seasons, he has gone 36-27 with a 3.97 ERA in 100 games (98 starts), including a 13-9, 3.55 mark in 34 games (33 starts) for the Royals during their run to the 2015 World Series title, when he set a Club record with 23 strikeouts in a single postseason. His 36 wins in that time are tied for 18th among MLB right-handed pitchers, his 98 starts rank tied for fourth, behind leaders Max Scherzer and James Shields (100 each), and his 582.1 innings rank 16th.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Volquez was a National League All-Star with Cincinnati in 2008, when he went 17-6 in 33 games (32 starts), with a 3.21 ERA and a career-best 206 strikeouts. He has a 61-42, 3.99 record in his career against NL opponents, compared to a 28-37, 5.20 mark against the American League. His record against the NL includes a 20-12, 3.16 mark against NL East teams; he is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in two career starts at Marlins Park.
