ST. LOUIS -- The Marlins ended up paying more, but the organization is hopeful it will be worth it to secure the services of prep outfielder Thomas Jones, its third-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Jones, selected 84th overall on June 10, has signed with Miami rather than attend Vanderbilt University. According to MLB.com's Jim Callis, Jones' bonus is $1 million.
The recommended bonus for the 84th pick is $741,700.

With Jones locked up, the Marlins have one significant pick still unsigned, and that's their first-rounder, left-hander Braxton Garrett, the seventh overall pick who is represented by Scott Boras. A deal could come down to Friday's 5 p.m. ET deadline. If the prep star from Florence, Ala., doesn't sign, he has a commitment to attend Vanderbilt.
The recommended bonus for the No. 7 pick is $3,756,300.

Jones was a two-sport standout at Laurens (S.C.) High School. Along with being a speedy center fielder who belted five homers and batted .420, Jones was a three-star football recruit, drawing interest from schools like Notre Dame, North Carolina and South Carolina.
"With the body that he has and the athleticism that he has, really, the sky is the limit on what he can be," Marlins vice president of scouting Stan Meek said when Jones was drafted in June. "Obviously, he's got to get at-bats under his belt. He's one of those special athletes."
