The Miami Marlins today announced the free agent signings of right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson and infielder Chris Johnson to one-year contracts for the 2016 season. The announcement was made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.
 
Jackson, 32, combined to go 4-3, 3.07 with one save in 47 appearances, all in relief, in 2015. He opened the season with the Cubs before signing with Atlanta in August. The 13-year veteran began his Major League career in 2003 with the Dodgers after being drafted by Los Angeles in the sixth round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft. An All-Star in 2009, Jackson has pitched for the Dodgers (2003-05), Tampa Bay (2006-08), Detroit (2009), Arizona (2010), White Sox (2010-11), Cardinals (2011), Nationals (2012), Cubs (2013-15) and Braves (2015). Jackson pitched in the postseason in 2008, 2011 and 2012, winning a World Series in 2011 with the Cardinals. He was born in West Germany and resides in Atlanta, Ga.   
 
Johnson, 31, began 2015 with Atlanta before being traded in August to Cleveland, combining to hit .255 (62x243) in 83 games, including .289 (26x90) in 27 games with the Indians. He started his MLB career in 2009 with Houston after being drafted by the Astros in the fourth round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Johnson has played with Houston (2009-12), Arizona (2012), Atlanta (2013-15) and Cleveland (2015), appearing at first base third base and in the outfield during his career. In 2013, Johnson was second in the NL with a .321 batting average and his 142 hits were second among NL third basemen. In 2014, Johnson led the NL and was second in the Majors in batting against left-handed pitchers, with a .395 (45x114) mark against lefties. For his career, he owns a .314 (211x673) mark against lefties. Johnson, who was born in Naples, Fla., attended Stetson University and graduated from Bishop Verot High School in Ft. Myers.
 
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Marlins designated INF Tommy Medica and RHP Andre Rienzo for assignment.
