Marshall praised for impressive outing

ST. LOUIS -- It was the kind of outing that could have a carryover effect.

D-backs rookie Evan Marshall pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the 10th inning Wednesday night when he struck out Jon Jay and got Daniel Descalso to ground out.

"To get out of something like that is going to make him believe in himself more," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "He's getting validation."

Before the Jay at-bat, Gibson came out to talk to Marshall.

"He just looked me in the eyes, kept me calm and gave me a game plan," Marshall said.

There was also another purpose to Gibson's visit.

"You go out there and you just try to interrupt the flow of what's going on and just kind of gather your thoughts and remember you have the ability to get out of this, and he did a heck of a job," Gibson said.
