Matheny, Farrell appoint 2014 All-Star Game staffs

Gonzalez, Hurdle Named N.L. Coaches; Francona, Gardenhire Will Represent A.L.

National League All-Star manager Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals and American League All-Star manager John Farrell of the Boston Red Sox today officially announced the managers who will serve as their coaches at Major League Baseball's 85th All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 15th at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins.

Matheny has named managers Fredi Gonzalez of the Atlanta Braves and Clint Hurdle of the Pittsburgh Pirates to represent the Senior Circuit. Hurdle was an N.L. coach under Jack McKeon at the 2004 All-Star Game in Houston, while Gonzalez was a member of Tony La Russa's staff at the 2007 Midsummer Classic in San Francisco. Matheny's Cardinals staff - bench coach Mike Aldrete, bullpen coach Blaise Ilsley, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, hitting coach John Mabry, first base coach Chris Maloney, third base coach Jose Oquendo and bullpen catcher/instructor Jamie Pogue - will assist with batting practice and other field duties. Greg Hauck, athletic trainer of the Cardinals, and Ben Potenziano, assistant athletic trainer of the Pirates, will round out the N.L. All-Star staff.

Farrell has invited managers Terry Francona of the Cleveland Indians and Ron Gardenhire of the host Twins to join his A.L. staff. Francona has twice served as the American League All-Star manager, and Farrell was his pitching coach for the 2008 Midsummer Classic at Yankee Stadium. This assignment marks Gardenhire's third stint as an A.L. coach (previously: 2003 and 2007). Farrell has invited his Red Sox coaches - first base coach Arnie Beyeler, third base coach Brian Butterfield, hitting coach Greg Colbrunn, bullpen coach Dana LeVangie, bench coach Torey Lovullo, pitching coach Juan Nieves and assistant hitting coach Victor Rodriguez - to join him in Minnesota. Head athletic trainers Dave Pruemer of the Twins and Kevin Harmon of the Texas Rangers will tend to the A.L. All-Stars.

The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15th. The 85th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
