ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays shortstop Matt Duffy exited Tuesday's 15-1 Rays win over the Padres after the third inning, and was replaced by Tim Beckham.
Duffy had mild soreness in his left Achilles, and was removed as a precaution. He said he felt some soreness before the game, and was taken out once the Rays had a 7-0 lead. Duffy returned from the disabled list on Friday after recovering from an left Achilles strain.
"[Rays manager] Kevin [Cash] made the call to shut it down and be safer than sorry," Duffy said. "I'm not a big fan of coming out of games, but at the same time, I understand it."
Though he was playing for the Giants, his original Achilles injury occurred at Tropicana Field when the Rays hosted San Francisco in June. Duffy said he wasn't sure if the harder indoor surface is working against him, but that it's possible.
Duffy was 2-for-2 with two singles before coming out. His last hit came in the bottom of the third inning and was an infield single down the third-base line.
Duffy came to the Rays after being traded from San Francisco on Aug. 1 in the deal that sent Matt Moore to the Giants. He is hitting .368 during his brief tenure in Tampa Bay.
