NEW YORK -- Designated hitter Matthew Holliday was out of the Yankees' starting lineup against the Cardinals for a second straight day on Sunday. Holliday was scratched shortly before the game Saturday afternoon because of a stiff lower back and manager Joe Girardi said he was still feeling some lingering discomfort.
"He still feels it a little bit. I'd be surprised if he's not a player for me tomorrow," Girardi said before the Yankees' 9-3 win. "He wants to play, but my fear is [that] if you still feel it and aggravate it, you could be down for a week."
Holliday did take batting practice on Sunday. The 37-year-old, in his first year with the club, was batting .242/.419/.394 with one homer and five RBIs in 10 games.
