BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have optioned left-hander T.J. McFarland to Triple-A Norfolk and activated shortstop J.J. Hardy and right-hander Yovani Gallardo for Saturday's game, the team announced.
Baltimore sent down right-hander Mike Wright on Friday night after he allowed eight runs in a 13-3 loss. But to make room for Hardy and Gallardo, they needed to make an additional move.
With third baseman Manny Machado's suspension beginning Sunday, the O's opted to keep utility infielders Paul Janish and Ryan Flaherty rather than play four games without a backup infielder on the roster.
"We are going to be short somewhere regardless," manager Buck Showalter said. "That's part of the penalty. Kind of pick your poison."
In his most recent stint with Baltimore, McFarland, who was last recalled from Norfolk on June 1, threw four scoreless outings sandwiched around an appearance with five earned runs allowed on June 11. In 13 games with the O's this season, the 27-year-old is 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA.
The move leaves Showalter with two lefties in the 'pen, closer Zach Britton and Brian Duensing. Showalter named McFarland as one of the options to start Wednesday in the place of Wright, but McFarland he won't be able to be recalled for 10 days barring an injury to an Orioles player.
Gallardo returned for his first start since April 22 after missing nearly two months with right shoulder/bicep tendinitis. Hardy, meanwhile, was slotted eighth in the O's lineup in his first game back since May 1 as he was on the disabled list with a fractured left foot. In Saturday's 4-2 win over the Blue Jays, Hardy went 1-for-3 with a double, and Gallardo allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five in five innings.
