Upton returns; Wallace to paternity list

July 18th, 2016

ST. LOUIS -- The Padres reinstated outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. from the bereavement list before Monday night's game against the Cardinals.
In a corresponding move, San Diego also placed backup first baseman on the paternity list. Wallace and his wife, Taylar, welcomed their first child on Monday -- a boy named Beckett Alexander Wallace.
Upton missed the Padres' three games against the Giants over the weekend, and he is set to begin his second half Monday night. He was in the starting lineup, leading off and playing center field.
"We talked about it yesterday if it was best to get [Upton] a day off and take BP," Padres manager Andy Green said. "But we felt pretty good about getting out here and getting to work today. Everybody, over the All-Star break, takes three, four days off. His was twice as long because of what he's been through, but he wants to get back on the field and play baseball."
Upton batted .262/.311/.454 during the first half with several highlight-reel plays, including three walk-off home runs, three robbed home runs and a straight steal of home.
