Mets acquire catcher Kelly Shoppach

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 14, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced the team acquired catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Boston Red Sox on a waiver claim for a player to be named later. 

Shoppach, 32, hit .250 (35-140) with five home runs, 12 doubles and 17 RBI in 48 games with the Red Sox this season.  The 6-0, 220-pound native of Fort Worth, TX, joined the Red Sox this year after spending two seasons with Tampa Bay. 

Shoppach, who bats and throws righthanded, has .227 (324-1428) lifetime batting average and 64 home runs and 197 RBI in 508 games with Boston, Cleveland and Tampa Bay.  He made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2005.
