Mets acquire RHP Tyler Clippard

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 27, 2015 - The New York Mets today announced the club has acquired two-time All-Star righthanded pitcher Tyler Clippard and cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league righthanded pitcher Casey Meisner. To make room on the 40-man roster, righthanded pitcher Erik Goeddel was transferred to the 60-Day Disabled List.

Clippard, 30, was 1-3 with 17 saves and a 2.79 ERA (12 earned runs/38.2 innings) in 37 games for the Athletics this season. Lefthanders are 7-70 (.100) against Clippard this year.

The 6-3, 200-pounder has held lefthanders to a .183 (172-942) career batting average and righthanders to a .197 (186-942) mark.

Clippard went 7-4 with one save a 2.18 ERA (17 earned runs/70.1 innings) and 82 strikeouts in 75 games for the Washington Nationals in 2014. He led the majors with 40 holds last year.

Clippard was named to the NL All-Star team in 2014 and 2011. He is the only pitcher to appear in 70 or more games in each of the last five seasons (2010-2014).

The Lexington, KY native is 38-28 with 51 saves, a 2.87 ERA (169 earned runs/529.2 innings) and 586 strikeouts over his nine-year major league career with the Yankees, Nationals and Athletics. He was drafted by the Yankees in the ninth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, before he was traded to Washington on December 4, 2007 for righthanded pitcher Jonathon Albaladejo.

Clippard has pitched in the postseason in 2012 and 2014 with the Nationals, allowing one run in 6.0 innings over six appearances.

Meisner, 20, was the Mets third-round pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. He was 10-4 with 2.35 ERA (29 earned runs/111.0 innings) in 18 starts combined this year with Savannah (A) of the South Atlantic League and St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League.
