Mets and American Red Cross team up to host blood drive Aug 18

Donors Will Receive a Pair of Tickets To Monday, September 17 Mets-Phillies Game at 7:10 P.M.

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 14, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced they are teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive this Saturday, August 18 from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. in the Caesars Club at Citi Field.  Donors can enter the ballpark through the Hodges VIP Entrance and park in Lot G. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting redcrossblood.org and use Reference Sponsor Code 16064nyp.

“Blood must be on hand when it’s needed to help save a life, whether it be a young mother who needs blood during a difficult childbirth, a friend or family member needing blood during cancer treatments or the victim of a traumatic injury who needs several units of blood in the emergency room,” said Donna M. Morrissey, Director, Communications, American Red Cross Blood Services – Northeast Division. “We are so pleased to be working with the New York Mets to bring another occasion to the people of New York City to donate blood and experience giving the gift of life.”

“We are proud to partner with the American Red Cross and spread awareness about the need for blood donations,” said Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations, Mets.  “The blood drive is a great way for fans to give back to the community.”

All donors will receive a complimentary pair of tickets to the Monday, September 17 Mets-Phillies game at 7:10 p.m.  All presenting donors will also be able to enter to win prizes that include a home theatre system (a flat screen TV, surround sound system and Blu Ray player) donated by Best Buy and many more.

The blood drive comes at a crucial time for the Red Cross, as summer months can take a toll on the blood supply, with high schools and colleges on break and many potential donors pursuing summer activities.  Unfortunately, patients don’t get a holiday from needing blood products.  The need is constant, and donations must be continual to provide for hospital patients in need.  Yet, despite this constant need, only 5 percent of the eligible population actually donates blood.

The American Red Cross has been a primary supplier of lifesaving blood products in the United States for more than 50 years.  The American Red Cross Blood Services - Northeast Division must distribute approximately 3,000 units of blood each day just to meet the basic needs of area patients.  To donate blood and platelets through the American Red Cross, individuals must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in general good health.  The states of Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania allow those who are 16 years of age to donate blood with parental consent.  For additional information regarding donor eligibility, please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.
