Murphy begins Minor League rehab stint
Goes 1-for-1 with a walk; expected to play 3 games
MILWAUKEE -- Injured second baseman Daniel Murphy began a Minor League rehab assignment on Wednesday, keeping him on track to join the Mets this weekend.
Murphy, who has been on the disabled list since June 5 with a strain in his left quad, went 1-for-1 with a walk for the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets. He played third base until the game was called in the fourth inning because of rain.
When Murphy does return to the big leagues, he should man third until David Wright comes off the DL, making second base a potential timeshare between Ruben Tejada and Dilson Herrera. Murphy was by far the Mets' hottest hitter prior to his injury, batting .346 with an .883 OPS in his last 37 games.
Manager Terry Collins said he expects Murphy to appear in approximately three Minor League rehab games before returning to the Mets.
