Murphy leaves game with left quad discomfort

NEW YORK -- With the Mets already ahead by a comfortable amount and Matt Harvey on the mound, Daniel Murphy decided to speak up to the coaches about the discomfort he was feeling in his left quad.

He was removed from New York's 9-4 win over the Phillies in the third inning in what the Mets called a precautionary move. However, Murphy did not travel with the team to Miami on Wednesday night and was scheduled to be examined on the Mets' off-day Thursday.

"He was smart to say something tonight," manager Terry Collins said. "I don't think it's real serious."

Murphy, who hit a run-scoring double and scored in the third inning on Michael Conforto's two-run homer, already landed on the disabled list from June 5-30 with a strained left quad. He said he has been dealing with the injury since and described his quad as "just a shade less than 100 percent."

"It's there some days, other days it's better," Murphy said. "Today it was a little sore."

Losing Murphy for any significant time could be a huge blow for the Mets.

He is batting .278/.314/.439 since coming off the DL with six homers and 28 RBIs. He is tied for the Major League lead with 11 doubles in August and has served as the team's primary first baseman with Lucas Duda on the DL.

On Wednesday, Murphy was replaced in the game at first base by Michael Cuddyer.
