Gavin Cecchini continued his strong Arizona Fall League campaign by going 3-for-5 with a solo home run on Saturday, though the performance wasn't enough to keep Scottsdale from falling to Peoria, 3-2, at Peoria Stadium.
After lining out to left field in his first at-bat, Cecchini, the Mets' No. 3 prospect, picked up his first hit of the day, a single to left field, in the top of the third inning. He would strike out in his next trip to the plate in the fifth, swinging through a 1-2 changeup from Peoria reliever Emilio Pagan (Mariners), only to atone with a solo home run, his first of the Fall League, two innings later. In the ninth, Cecchini tallied his third hit of the contest on a groundball to second base.

After getting his first taste of the Fall League in 2015, Cecchini has hit the ground running this year in his second tour of the circuit. Through six games for the Scorpions, the 22-year-old shortstop has produced a .350/.423/.600 batting line with three extra-base hits and five RBIs, the latter giving him a share of the team lead. His performance comes on the heels of an excellent 2016 Minor League campaign during which he batted .325 with eight home runs and 71 runs scored across 117 games at Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Mets included Cecchini among their callups in September, selecting his contract from Las Vegas following the completion of the Minor League season. The 2012 first-rounder impressed despite limited opportunities, going 2-for-6 with two doubles and two RBIs while appearing in parts of four games.
Friday's game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when catcher Taylor Ward (Angels' No. 3 ) plated Ryder Jones (Giants) with a one-out single to center field to give Scottsdale a 1-0 advantage.
Cecchini would add to the Scorpions' lead in the top of the seventh, as he deposited a 91-mph fastball from Peoria reliever Kyle Bird over the wall in left field.
But all it took was one swing of the bat from Peoria shortstop Zach Vincej (Reds) in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Rays No. 15 prospectJustin Williams opened the frame with a double and Michael Gettys (Padres' No. 10) followed with a walk, and both runners advanced a base on a Franchy Cordero (Padres) groundout. Two batters later, Vincej knotted the score at 2-2 with a two-out, two-run triple to center field.

Scottsdale reliever Eduardo Paredes recorded a quick out to begin the bottom of the ninth before yielding a one-out single to Gettys, who then swiped second base and advanced to third when Ward's throw was mishandled by Cecchini. Cordero made the Scorpions pay for the miscue, as he laced a 1-2 offering back up the middle for the game-winning hit.
Cecchini and Ward were the only two Scottsdale players to tally multiple hits in the game, with the latter finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI. On the mound, Scorpions starter Corey Oswalt tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk. The 23-year-old right-hander fanned four in the performance while throwing 31 of 49 pitches for strikes.
Vincej paced the Javelinas' offense with his pair of RBIs and was one of six Peoria hitters to tally a knock in the game. Gettys, 20, reached based in three of his four plate appearances, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a steal, while Nick Ciuffo (Rays' No. 25) collected his third Fall League double as part of a 1-for-3 performance.
