SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Tim Tebow will play in the Mets' Minor League system this coming season, but an assignment hasn't been determined, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said on Tuesday at the General Managers Meetings.
Tebow, the football star turned baseball player, is currently playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League.
Tebow will not be placed on the big league club's 40-man roster nor has he been invited to Major League camp, which opens in February at the Mets' Spring Training facility in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Alderson said.
"It's probably better if he can compete in a full season," Alderson said. "I don't know yet. We'll see what happens. Assignments are made late in Spring Training, so that would be true for him as well."
Tebow signed a Minor League contract with the Mets worth $100,000 on Sept. 8. He played briefly in the Florida instructional league before heading to Arizona.
Tebow hasn't played baseball competitively since high school and said earlier this month that he had no idea what the Mets have in store for him. He leaves his AFL team each week on Friday to fulfill his job as a college football analyst on weekends.
Alderson said he hadn't seen Tebow play in the AFL, missing the left-handed hitter's walk-off single at Scottsdale Stadium in a 4-3 win over Mesa on Monday night.
Tebow has struggled in the Fall League, batting .146 through 12 games. He opened 0-for-14 before lining a single to left and went 1-for-4 with a walk on Monday night.
Alderson said he intended to see Tebow play in an AFL game at Scottsdale Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
