With Noah Syndergaard out for an extended period of time with a torn right lat muscle, it is up to the rest of the Mets' pitching staff to help shoulder the load.
There is perhaps no one more qualified for the task than New York right-hander Jacob deGrom, who is striking out batters at the best rate of his career, and at a mark that ranks among the best hurlers in baseball.
The 2014 National League Rookie of the Year, deGrom has retired 44 hitters via strikeout in just 31 2/3 frames, which averages out to 12.5 punchouts per nine innings. That number is well above his career average of 9.4 K/9, and while probably not sustainable, deGrom has been a force on the mound since entering the league in 2014.
deGrom looks to keep mowing down batters when he faces his former teammate, Bartolo Colon, and the Braves on Wednesday evening, streaming live on MLB.TV.

Throughout his 10-year career, the Nationals' Giovany Gonzalez has typically thrived in the month of April. This year has been no different, as the left-hander went 3-0 with a 1.62 ERA in five starts, all of which lasted at least six innings, during the season's first month.
Gonzalez will have maybe his toughest test to date, facing one of the most potent lineups in all of baseball. Paul Goldschmidt, the most dangerous hitter in the D-backs' batting order, is 8-for-12 (.667) with a double, a triple and three RBIs off Gonzalez in his career. It's a matchup worth keeping an eye on.

Arizona counters with a lefty of its own, Robbie Ray, who is 2-1 with a 3.56 ERA so for in 2017.

The MLB.TV Free Game of the Day features two starters who have begun 2017 in strong fashion, as Carlos Carrasco and Matthew Boyd square off at Comerica Park.
Carrasco has been stellar, especially of late, completing eight innings in each of his last two starts. His 2-2 record does not reflect how well he's pitched. His 2.04 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings does.
Boyd struggled in his first outing of the season, but has turned it around with two wins in his last two decisions. He lasted seven innings in his most recent outing, his longest start of the year.
Anderson still perfect: MIL@STL, 8:15 p.m.
Chase Anderson is throwing the ball as well as he ever has, and as a result, the Brewers' right-hander has not lost a start since Aug. 28, 2016. The 29-year-old has allowed just 13 earned runs in 57 1/3 innings (2.04 ERA) since his last loss.

His most recent outing against the Braves was not his best, but he still managed to complete six innings while allowing four runs in a no-decision. Anderson will attempt to keep the streak alive in St. Louis, where he'll square off against Adam Wainwright (2-3, 6.12) and the Cardinals.

Julio Urías returns to the mound for the second time this season. He faced the Giants in his first start, too, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing just one earned run in a 5-1 Dodgers victory.
The 20-year-old walked four San Francisco batters Thursday, something he will look to fix Wednesday evening. Walks were pretty much the only knock on what was a solid rookie year in 2016, as he went 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA, but issued 31 free passes in 77 innings.
Jeff Samardzija is still seeking his first win in 2017. The right-hander, who is 0-4 with a 6.32 ERA, will try to top Urías and the Dodgers in the series finale.
