Mets put Goeddel on DL, recall Muno
NEW YORK -- Playing with a short bench for most of June, the Mets rebalanced their roster on Friday. The team placed reliever Erik Goeddel on the disabled list with a strained right elbow and recalled infielder Danny Muno from Triple-A Las Vegas, returning to a standard five-man bench.
Goeddel, 26, had spent this season developing into one of the Mets' more trusted relievers, posting a 1.96 ERA over 22 appearances, with 23 strikeouts in 23 innings. Opening the season in Las Vegas, Goeddel joined the Mets after Jenrry Mejia was suspended, then reeled off 14 consecutive scoreless outings.
An MRI performed on the elbow on Friday provided little clarity due to previous injuries in the area. Goeddel, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007 and had a second operation two years later to remove scar tissue from the joint, will undergo further testing next week.
"They told me to just rest and ice it until then," Goeddel said. "Hopefully, at that point, I'll get a better answer."
Muno, 26, arrived at Citi Field on Friday for his fourth big league stint of the season. Muno has hit .100 in 11 games for a Mets team that needs his defensive versatility; he has professional experience at second base, third base and shortstop. Prior to Friday's game, the Mets spent several days playing without a legitimate backup at any of those positions.
• The Mets have cleared catcher Kevin Plawecki to play for the first time since he was diagnosed with clogged sinuses. Plawecki has begun taking stronger antibiotics, which have provided near-complete relief.
"I was starting to get a little scared there," Plawecki said. "I wanted to make sure it wasn't anything too serious."
